Organ Concert

The painting Organ Concert depicts aspects of my synaesthetic perception during an organ concerto in the famous Baroque Frauenkirche in Dresden.

The bass frequencies cause horizontal lines in the lower part of the image. Mid and high frequencies excite a visual stream of bright red, green, and yellow colours that ascend upward into the dome. The colours refer to the timbres of the respective organ stops. Colours are reflected in the various parts of the vault according to the reverberation of the sound. The bright and intense sound of the Open Diapason stop (German: Prinzipal) generates silver leaves flowing into the dome.

The concert was held on March 24, 2026, on the occasion of the annual acoustics conference DAGA 2026. The remarkable performance was played by the cantor Matthias Grünert.

Flute Concert: Sonata for Recorder and Piano F major by Johann Sebastian Bach

based on the Sonata in E-flat Minor for Flute and Harpsichord BWV 1031

29x19cm, Acrylic on cardboard, 2022

The three acrylic paintings visually translate the movements of the flute sonata into colors and forms. Shades of yellow and red represent the timbres of the recorder, while the piano appears in blue, violet, and gray. Some characteristic motifs of the piece are thus transformed into colors and shapes. The temporal flow, however, is dissolved by nesting a small selection of motifs on the canvas, so that time spatially progresses in different directions. This also creates focal points, and each movement takes on an individual character.

I performed this sonata at a concert at the Teatro Martínez in Alcalá la Real (Andalusia) together with the brilliant pianist Svetlana Rudenko. The corresponding image was projected onto the screen for each movement. It was left to the audience to identify themes in the images or to make their own associations.
